How to Know When to Service and Replace Your Belts and Hoses

Your engine's belts and hoses, which are critical to your vehicle, will someday dry out and crack, so it's important to maintain them and replace them when needed.

The timing belt is a toothed belt with reinforcement that is used to drive the camshaft by way of a sprocket to the crankshaft to ensure proper synchronization. Look for worn teeth and fraying, and be sure to check them if the engine backfires or stops. The serpentine belt transfers power from the crankshaft to all of the engine's accessories. Without it, the vehicle can overheat and loose power steering. Look for cracking, splitting, squealing, and slipping. The coolant hoses are critical because they transfer coolant throughout the engine's cooling system. Look for cracking, splitting, and soft or brittle spots.
