What's the Story Behind Horsepower?

One, of the many, things people consider when purchasing a new vehicle is, how much horsepower does it have. Interestingly enough, most people have no idea what the term even means. The term originated in the 18th century and had nothing to do with vehicles at all.

According to legend, an inventor, James Watt, was looking for a way to sell more of his steam engines. He needed a word that would catch the interest of folks at that time. While working in the coal mines he started observing the ponies.

He figured out that one pony could achieve 22,000 foot-pounds of work per minute. Watt multiplied that by 50% and named it one unit of horsepower. If all your engine had was one horsepower that would equal one pony, pulling 33 pounds per minute.
